When it comes to choosing a cruise destination, you really are spoilt for choice. Just about every stretch of water in the world, be it the open oceans or major rivers, have cruise companies offering all kinds of cruises and itineraries; everything from the adventurous Antarctic explorer cruises to leisurely Nile river cruises.
Some destinations like Alaska only have a relatively short cruise season, so you will have to plan your vacation around the cruise season whereas as others like the Caribbean are year round cruise destinations and you can go pretty much when you wish.
Major cruise destinations of the world include Alaska, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, Europe including Greenland, Iceland, the Baltic and Mediterranean, North America and the Great Lakes, Central America and the Panama Canal, South America, Australasia and the South Pacific, Africa, Hawaii, the Antarctic and major rivers including the Amazon, Danube, Dnieper, Elbe, Mississippi, Nile, Po, Rhine, Rhone, Volga and Yangtze.
There are also trans-Atlantic cruises, world cruises and positioning cruises where a ship is moving from one part of the world to another at the start or end of a cruise season. For example some American cruise companies will position cruise ships to the Mediterranean for part of the year and offer a positioning cruise (in conjunction with a flight).
